To The Rescue

"Hunger is not an issue of charity. It is an issue of justice." ~ Jacques Diouf
The Peace Meal Project hosted a summer dinner party to benefit Boulder Food Rescue.
We learned how Boulder Food Rescue works with the community to redistribute food "waste" to agencies that feed those in need.
Read About Boulder Food Rescue Below
Boulder Food Rescue is a non-profit organization whose goal is to create a more just and less wasteful food system. They facilitate the sustainable redistribution of food “waste” to agencies that feed hungry, homeless, and low-income populations while educating communities about food justice.
In order to prove that such a system can also be sustainable, Boulder Food Rescue does all of the food rescue by bike (except in cases of extreme weather or extremely large food rescue events). The food gets dellivered to one of the 40 recipient sites they partner with and is typically used within 24-48 hours.
To date, Boulder Food Rescue has redirected 1,322,839 pounds of good food from landfills to hungry bellies in the city of Boulder. 661 tons of food is an awesome start, and has huge impacts in Boulder, but there's so much more to be done. This amount of food would fill 10 standard railroad boxcars---only a tiny bite into the 450,000 boxcars worth of food that is wasted annually in the US!

Guests enjoyed a lovely evening amongst the blooms of our courtyard garden. Our delicious potluck buffet included an assortment of garden-fresh dishes.
Boulder Food Rescue works with area businesses to identify food that would otherwise be thrown away, which can be diverted from the dumpster (or compost bin). Once a day, one of their volunteers rolls up with their bike, loads the food into a bike trailer and hauls it directly to an organization that is scheduled to receive it. They call this “direct just-in-time” food rescue, because it doesn’t require any storage or sorting and the food can be used immediately.
Food is provided to day shelters and food pantries that serve the homeless and low-income folk. Boulder Food Rescue works with community leaders at low income senior housing sites, individual housing sites and family housing sites, as well as after-school programs and pre-schools. They also provide food to special events for charities on occasion and provide some food to pay-what-you-can meals and low income housing cooperatives.
