PEACE BY PEACE - September 19, 2009
"Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal." ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.
Every year, during the month of September, people throughout the world work together to celebrate the United Nation's International Day of Peace. On Saturday, September 19, 2009, The Peace Meal Project joined the September Global Peace Tour in commemorating Peace Day and promoting peace through peaceful means.
We hosted a potluck dinner featuring Liberian dishes and screened the film Pray the Devil Back to Hell. This multi-award winning documentary film tells the gripping account of a group of brave and visionary women who demanded peace for Liberia, a nation torn to shreds by civil war.
Thousands of women - ordinary mothers, grandmothers, aunts and daughters, both Christian and Muslim - came together to pray for peace and then staged a silent protest outside of the Presidential Palace. Armed only with white tee shirts and the courage of their convictions, they took on the warlords and nonviolently forced a resolution during the stalled peace talks. The inspiring story of these ordinary women organizing to bring peace is a compelling testimony of how grassroots activism can alter the history of nations.
